Virgo Season, a Virgo New Moon, and Another Virgo New Moon

The heat has been relentless, the internet frantic, and the political theatre feels like a never-ending sideshow no one asked for. My patience is very thin as we wind down Leo season and I find myself reallllllly longing for autumn’s relief - more than usual. I want the air crisp enough to make me inhale deeply. I want the sound of dry leaves scraping along the ground. I want sweaters, candles, and soups that simmer all day. I want the psychic space that cooler air seems to bring.
And here we are, on the threshold of a new astrological season and lunar cycle that promises clarity, recalibration, and sovereignty.
And as Virgo energy reminds us, we work with what is, not with what we wish for.
Virgo energy doesn’t deal in fantasy. It doesn’t wait for perfect conditions, cooler weather, or a calmer political climate before beginning the work. It says: start now, right where you are. No matter how messy, overheated, or inconvenient it feels, this is the raw material you have, and it’s enough.
Case in point: last week, a groundhog broke into my kitchen. Yes, a dripping wet groundhog waddled its way into my home. Groundhogs symbolize preparation, awareness, and retreat, they are a reminder to create strong boundaries, tend to your den, and focus on what truly sustains you. They are master timekeepers, emerging from their burrows only when it feels right, tucking away when the season calls for rest, and always maintaining the security of their den. They live in harmony with cycles, not in defiance of them. They remind us to set clear boundaries between the inner and outer worlds, between what nourishes and what depletes, and to tend to the home, the heart, and the body as sacred spaces.
The timing was uncanny. Here we are beginning Virgo season, with TWO Virgo New Moons that all but insists we examine our foundations.
Where do we feel safe and supported?
Where are the cracks in the walls that allow in what doesn’t belong?
The groundhog’s unexpected visit felt like a nudge from the universe: strengthen your boundaries and focus on what truly sustains you. Virgo’s gift is that it doesn’t just notice what’s out of alignment, it gets in there, sleeves rolled up, and makes the necessary adjustments.
The message is clear: all this Virgo energy isn’t asking us to build a whole new life overnight.
It’s asking us to fortify the one we already have.
To sweep out the clutter, both literal and emotional.
To nourish what’s alive and working.
And to give ourselves the sovereignty to decide, without guilt or outside influence, what gets to stay and what must go. Virgo is asking us to strengthen our foundations, declutter what’s unnecessary, and return to the self as a sovereign being.
Virgo is a mutable earth sign, grounded yet adaptable, a symbol of wholeness and sovereignty. Sovereignty means supreme authority over oneself, because its the ability to live from your own center, free from the static of external voices. Virgo is often misunderstood as saintly perfection, or a snobby someone who thinks they are better than anyone else. Which is far from the truth, but easy to see how that perception arises. The word “virgin,” tied to this sign, has less to do with chastity or purity and more to do with sovereignty. In its original sense, virgin meant “whole unto oneself,” belonging to no one, complete and independent.
This is Virgo’s true essence: a being who carries their wholeness within, who doesn’t need external validation to confirm their worth. It’s an archetype of sacred autonomy, the healer who can serve others without losing themselves because they are deeply rooted in their own center.
As an earth sign, Virgo is the grounded healer, the one who works with what’s tangible like body, breath, ritual - the small daily actions that weave real change. Virgo heals not through grand gestures, but through presence, attention, and care. Virgo reminds us that tending the body, the home, and the rhythms of daily life are holy acts of healing, too. They are masters at finding the sacred and magic in the mundane. To them there is no other way.
But like all signs, Virgo carries a shadow. When out of balance, Virgo seeks safety in perfection, believing that if everything is flawless, orderly, or under control, then chaos and pain can be kept at bay. This drive can lead to self-criticism, over-functioning, and a fixation on what isn’t working, rather than what already holds beauty. Nobody is meaner to a Virgo than themselves when they are lost in their shadow, and that criticism and nagging they are known for is nothing compared to the criticism they unleash on themselves. If you look in your birth chart and see what house and planets Virgo falls in, you can grasp the aspects and areas where you try to over control and criticize yourself the most over. I guarantee it will be eye opening...and as someone who personally has FIVE major Virgo placements in their chart, trust me when I say - no one can meaner to me, than me.
Balanced Virgo, however, is not about perfection, it’s about integration. It teaches that true safety is not in control, but in alignment. Wholeness is not found in erasing flaws, but in honoring them as part of the tapestry. Balanced Virgo energy channels discernment into clarity, humility into service, and attention to detail into devotion. It shows us that healing is not about “fixing” ourselves, but about remembering our innate wholeness and living from it. To be sovereign, we must align our preferences, behaviors, needs, and motivations. We must live in our own rhythm, not according to “shoulds” or other people’s blueprints.
If you’re feeling uncertain, and many of us are in this sticky, unpredictable global atmosphere, call on Virgo’s mutable nature. Remember that change is part of life’s fabric. Even when things feel scattered, focus on what you can control. Make a list, create a plan, and take one small step at a time. Virgo is deeply intuitive and self-trusting - qualities we can all tap into now.
Collectively, there’s a push-pull energy right now. Many are craving stability but feeling bombarded by noise - political drama, economic uncertainty, social tension, our own inner critic. Virgo energy asks us to step away from the chaos and into mindful discernment. To filter what we take in. To remember that healing starts within and ripples outward.
The first Virgo New Moon offers a clear moment to pause, see what’s not working, and chart a course that feels authentic. This year is especially potent because 2025 brings us two Virgo New Moons, one at the very start of Virgo season in the 0 degree, and another at the very end in the last degree of 29, with an eclipse woven into the mix. Double New Moons like this years' in the same sign are rare. With the South Node traveling through Virgo during this eclipse season, we’re being asked not only to refine our lives, but also to release old Virgo patterns that no longer serve: perfectionism, self-criticism, and over-functioning in the name of service.
Think of this as an extended initiation into Virgo’s medicine. The first New Moon opens the doorway; the second (and the eclipse season) deepens the lesson and closes the loop. Together, they give us time and space to practice discernment, boundaries, and self-sovereignty in real, embodied ways. The key to working with so much Virgo energy is not to get lost in over-analysis, but to ground into simplicity, ritual, and rhythm. This is an invitation to strip things back to what is essential like body, home, spirit - and to remember that wholeness isn’t found in flawless order, but in living from your center with clarity and integrity.
With two Virgo New Moons this year, we’re not meant to have it all figured out in one go. Think of this first lunation as your initial clearing, a gentle yet firm recalibration. The second Virgo New Moon, arriving at the end of the season as an eclipse, will circle back to show us what we’ve integrated and what still needs releasing.
This is a rare opportunity to work in layers by refining, simplifying, and strengthening your foundation over time.
Trust that the process is cyclical.
Each step, each small act of discernment, builds toward a deeper sovereignty. Virgo’s medicine isn’t about arriving at perfection, it’s about living in alignment, over and over again.
