Working with the Moon

Updated: 7 days ago

“The moon is a loyal companion. It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human. Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.”

Tahereh Mafi

Working with the moon phases and living in its rhythm connects us to nature’s cyclical wisdom, offering a powerful framework for reflection, intention, and growth. Each phase of the moon carries its own unique energy, guiding us through cycles of creation, release, and renewal. Spiritually, aligning with the moon phases fosters a deep sense of harmony with the natural world, teaching us to honor the ebbs and flows of life rather than resist them. By syncing with the moon’s rhythm, we cultivate awareness of our inner cycles, access greater intuition, and learn to navigate transitions with grace and mindfulness, embracing the magic and wisdom inherent in these ancient cosmic patterns.

Moon worship, or the adoration of the moon, has been a widespread practice across cultures and eras. The moon has been interpreted as a god, planet, timekeeper, and calendar, and has been associated with many different things, including:

  • Rhythm of life: The moon's cyclical phases have been seen as a representation of the cosmos' rhythmic life and the idea that it governs change. The moon's changing appearance also symbolizes the passage of time and cycles.

  • Fate and rebirth: The moon's disappearance and reappearance has led to associations with fate, rebirth, and the underworld.

  • Femininity and motherhood: The moon is often associated with female deities and can represent femininity, nurturing energy, and motherhood. It can also symbolize female influence, intuition, and kindness.

  • Growth and manifestation: The phases of the moon can symbolize stages of growth or the process of manifesting desires, especially in spiritual practices. For example, some believe that the new moon is an auspicious time to set intentions because the darkened sky can be filled with the light of those intentions.

  • Intuition and dreams: The moon can also symbolize intuition, dreams, and the unconscious.

  • Emotions and intuition: The moon can be linked to the subconscious and emotional aspects of the mind. It can also represent our emotional landscape and give clues about our feelings and moods.

  • Spiritual enlightenment: In ancient mythologies and modern spiritual practices, the full moon is often associated with heightened emotions, intuition, and spiritual enlightenment. Some believe that during a full moon, the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is thinner, allowing for deeper connections and insights.

The moon takes 28 days to cycle through the new moon, waxing, full moon, and waning phases. While the cycle is the same, thanks to astrological placement, planetary movements, and the seasons, each cycle has different energetic feels. The moon’s 28-day cycle has a predictable, chartable rhythm that helped many countless generations of humans keep track of time, menstrual cycles, the seasons, and the year—all of which is crucial to the timing of planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops. The Moon also pulls the oceans around the earth, creating the tide with gravity. This is one of the most powerful forces to affect the Earth.

Because the moon’s cycle takes 28 days it sits opposite to sun energy. Winter and autumn are called the moon season, while spring and and summer are called the sun season. The Earth's tilted axis makes full moons more prominent in winter than in summer. The full moon closest to the winter solstice is called the Long Night Moon because it takes the highest path through the sky and is visible for longer than any other moon. Like winter, the moon is a feminine symbol, and symbolizes inner knowing, intuition, immortality and eternity, enlightenment and illumination, and the dark side of nature. Sun energy is bright, brilliant, and represents fast action with its 24 hour cycle. The slower moon cycle moon represents patience, stillness, and gradual growth. This makes the moon’s energy ideal for manifesting meaningful transformations. Working with moon requires us to flow like the tide - we need to sway and shift between giving and receiving, creating and surrendering, taking action and waiting.

Moon mapping is an astrological practice that involves aligning your life with the moon's phases and using the moon's energy as a guide. Each phase of the moon is thought to have its own energy and intentions, and you can plan your actions accordingly. For example, a full moon can be a time to celebrate your achievements, while a waning gibbous moon can be a time to focus on new plans. Moon mapping our lives means we try to act and choose according to the moon phase we are in.

Moon mapping is a practice that helps us access the moon's energy and use it as a guide for our lives. Since each lunar phase gives off a different energy we can use and harness that energy. By working with the moons cycle we are connecting ourselves even deeper to the understanding of what it means to live on this Earth.

Phases of the Moon:

New Moon: This is the blank slate in the moon's cycle and a time to set your intentions, make a wish, plant your seeds, start something new, ask for help. This is when we need to ask ourselves what do we want this upcoming cycle to look like, and what do you want the moon’s help with this month?

Waxing Moon: As the moon slowly grows we need to listen and plan. What can we do at this time that can help make our intentions actualize. Make a list and do what you can, if there are elements you have no control over then it is time to surrender, put your focus somewhere else, and let the universe take the wheel.

Full Moon: Bright illumination guides us on the full moon. What was hidden in the dark may now be clear - answers and solutions may appear, problems may be easily solved, inspiration strikes, and our overall energy can feel activated and renewed. The full moon in general is also time to release pent up energy, the past, and offer forgiveness to others and especially yourself. By emptying the cup we can refill the cup with illumination.

Waning Moon: As the moon wanes and grows darker, it is time to rest and prepare for the next cycle. Only in stillness can we integrate the lessons we have learned and understand what is next. Revisit your intentions and take stock of the progression. Clean out, declutter, and release what you no longer need - whether that it is in the physical, spiritual, or emotional world. Slow down, go inward, listen to your intuition.
